TMC Exam Eligibility Requirements
Are You Eligible to Take the TMC Exam?
Before you prep, make sure you qualify.
You must meet one of the following:
- Completed an associate degree from an accredited respiratory therapy program
- Have 4+ years of CRT experience + 62 college credit hours
- Have 2+ years of CRT experience + an associate degree
- Hold a baccalaureate degree + 2 years of CRT experience + 62 college credits
- Hold the CSRT RRT credential
TMC Exam Structure: Know What You’re Up Against
The TMC exam has 160 multiple-choice questions and lasts 3 hours. Of those, 140 questions are scored, while 20 are unscored “pretest” items that won’t impact your result.

How the TMC Exam is Scored
Each correct answer earns you one point. You’ll need to meet one of two “cut scores”:
- Low Cut Score (88+) = CRT credential
- High Cut Score (varies) = CRT + eligibility for the CSE (to become a Registered Respiratory Therapist)
If you fall short, don’t worry – you can retake the test:
- Up to 3 attempts with no waiting period
- After 3 attempts, a 120-day wait applies
