PTCB Exam Scoring System

The PTCB uses a scaled scoring system to ensure consistency and fairness, helping candidates receive an accurate reflection of their abilities, even across different versions of the exam.

Scaled Scoring Overview

The PTCB exam employs a scaled scoring system to convert raw scores into a standardized range, ensuring fair comparisons across different versions of the test. This approach accounts for variations in question difficulty, providing a more accurate reflection of candidates’ abilities. Scores on the PTCB exam range from 1,000 to 1,600, with a passing score set at 1,400 or higher.

Raw vs. Scaled Scores

The raw score represents the number of correctly answered questions, but it lacks adjustment for question difficulty, making it less reliable across different exam versions. In contrast, scaled scores adjust raw results to ensure consistency, fairness, and comparability.

The PTCB exam consists of 90 multiple-choice questions, divided as follows:

  • 80 scored questions were used in the final score calculation.
  • 10 unscored questions, randomly placed throughout the exam, which do not impact the final score.

Final scores are determined solely from responses to the 80 scored questions. By using scaled scoring, the PTCB ensures that all candidates are assessed on a level playing field, even if they encounter different test forms.

While candidates often aim for a percentage-based goal, scaling makes it difficult to predict the exact number of correct answers required to pass. Typically, answering about 66% of the questions correctly might result in a passing score, though this is not guaranteed.

Score Reports and Performance Feedback

After the exam, candidates receive a score report that breaks down performance across key knowledge areas, helping identify strengths and areas for improvement. This feedback is especially helpful for those preparing to retake the exam.

PTCB Exam Day: Requirements and Guidelines

Being well-prepared and following the necessary steps on exam day will help ensure a smooth, stress-free experience. Below are the key things to keep in mind, from the required documents to what you can expect during the process.

Essential Documents and What to Expect

Before entering the testing area, candidates must present specific documents and follow important check-in procedures.

  • Government-Issued Photo ID:
A valid, unexpired ID with a photo and signature is required. Ensure the name on the ID matches exactly with the name you used during registration to avoid delays.
  • Admission Ticket or Confirmation:
Bring your admission ticket or confirmation receipt to validate your exam appointment. This is essential for a smooth check-in process.

At the test center, plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled time to complete the check-in process. Arriving more than 15 minutes late may disqualify and forfeit your exam fee. Once checked in, personal belongings like bags, phones, and smartwatches must be stored in a designated locker, and all candidates will go through a security scan. Only permitted items will be allowed inside the testing area.

Online Proctored Exams: Additional Requirements

For candidates taking the exam remotely via Pearson VUE’s OnVUE platform, a few extra steps are necessary to meet online proctoring standards.

  • Testing Environment: Ensure you are in a quiet, private space with no distractions. As part of the check-in process, you will be required to upload photos of your testing area to confirm compliance with PTCB’s policies.
  • Technical Requirements: Use a compatible computer that is fully charged and meets the technical requirements specified by the PTCB. Running a system check beforehand is recommended to avoid disruptions during the exam.
  • Behavioral Rules: Stay visible on camera throughout the entire exam. No one else may be present in the room, and any disturbances or suspicious behavior may result in disqualification.

By following these requirements and staying prepared, candidates can confidently focus on doing their best during the exam. Careful planning—whether for in-person or online proctored exams—will set you up for success on PTCB exam day.
