If you’re preparing for the CNA exam, the hands-on skills test can feel intimidating. Examiners randomly select a few skills from a master list, and you must perform them step by step. This FAQ covers the 10 most-tested skills and gives you tips to succeed.

Which CNA skill is tested most often?

Proper handwashing must be demonstrated at the start and end of most skills. Missing a step here usually means automatic failure. Scrub for at least 20 seconds, clean under fingernails, and avoid recontaminating by touching the sink.

What other skills are most commonly tested?

Transferring a patient using a gait belt is one of the most frequent.

You must check the patient’s feet, apply the belt securely, position yourself correctly, and use proper body mechanics. Always communicate with the patient during the transfer.

Is measuring vital signs usually on the exam?

Yes. Blood pressure, pulse, or respiration measurement is almost always tested.

For blood pressure, place the cuff correctly, use a calibrated sphygmomanometer, and record within ±2 mmHg of the examiner’s reading. Pulse and respiration must be counted for a full 60 seconds.
